"Dear Mr Gordon

This slip was rather hard for me to fill out as I spent quite a lot of time in service before the war and my branch of the service placed me so that I could spend no time abroad as we simply unloaded the troops and came to the States for more

It was on my second trip across with troops that the 5" gun I was in charge of sunk [i.e., sank] a submarine on the third shot fired."
