Gordon Esteem[ed] friend I received your request quite some time ago for the record of my service and also my photo Well I am enclosing my picture for you to keep, also my promnchon [i.e., promotion] and also my discharg[e papers], which I am very proud to own but I ask you to file in return them to me you will see the date of my enlistment at fort slocum [is] also the date of my discharge I enlisted in the 3rd Infantry pershing own boys and when he left us for france we was sure we should be the first to follow him as the 3rd infantry is the oldest and best regiment of men the united states ever had and as got today but wword came that the 3rd must [all?]” Handwritten letter [verso]: “be taken off the border we was an awful [sory? or gay?] bunch of men I enlisted to be a ridder and a man and when I have seen my Dear olf mother all right so that she may have no cause to [way? wag?] it back to the good old 3rd for mine I thank you for your request and kindly favour me with mine in return of my paper the photo is yours.
