Note: Coal was still the primary fuel used by warships and colliers (coal refueling ships) and land-based coaling stations were essential to guarding shipping lanes and to the ability to chase down enemy warships at sea or submarines. Mines were used to prevent enemy ships from breaking out into the Atlantic, or put enemy vessels at risk when considering an attack on key ports and harbors. |
