Edgar A. Sharp Collection

In this collection are materials in the Celia M. Hastings Local History Room pertaining to Edgar A. Sharp (1876-1948), Patchogue native, and the first person to be elected to represent the First Congressional District of New York State in 1944.

Sharp began his career as clerk in the Patchogue Post Office in 1898 and became Assistant Postmaster in 1906, serving in that post for 12 years before being placed in charge of construction work for the Knights of Columbus in France and England for almost two years. After returning to Patchogue, he opened a real estate and insurance business, and also worked as a real estate appraiser; auctioneer; Commission Secretary of Brookhaven Town's Planning and Zoning Commission; Director of the Patchogue Citizens Bank and Trust Company; Trustee of its successor, the Union Savings Bank; and Supervisor of Brookhaven Town.

Most notably, the collection contains a number of photographs taken by both Sharp and Robert Bailey, Sr. while touring, for several weeks after the Armistice, areas of Europe left devastated by the first World War. The collection was donated by Robert Bailey, Jr., Sharp's godson.
