"In 1910 when this photo was taken, East Hampton still had several Montauk Indians living in the community of Freetown to which their ancestors moved from Indian Field in Montauk after losing the rich 3,200 acre reservation to Arthur Benson of Brooklyn in 1879.
The girl on the top own second from the left is Margeurite Fowler, the sister of "Red Man" Fowler in Photo No. 1. She was the daughter of George Lewis Fowler and Sarah Melissa Horton Fowler of the Montauks and was born in East Hampton on April 8, 1900. She was the only Fowler girl to reach adulthood. Harry and Harriet Fowler who were twins died in 1897 the same year that they were born.
Marguerite Fowler was a traditionalist. She was proud of her Indian heritage and in addition to making "Scrubs" the Montauk Pot Cleaner she was also a good beadworker. She was well liked by her neighbors and always had a friendly smile. She married the late Joseph La Porte a native of the Seychelle Islands. She died on October 30, 1944 and was buried in the Fowler family plot at Cedar Lawn Cemetery in East Hampton. Her ancestors are buried in the Indian Cemetery at Indian Field, East Lake Driver at Montauk."
