Description: The reverse reads:
"This beloved lady was the wife of King David Pharoah of the Montauk tribe. Her mother and father were both Montauks and members of the famous Fowler family. The majority of the Montauks moved to Oneida, New York in 1775 where together with the Narragansetts, Mohegans, Pequots, Nehantics and Tunxis Indians they formed the first town of Brothertown.
In 1832 because the Whites were crowding them out, they moved again, this time to the State of Wisconsin, where they bought 28,000 acres of land from the Winnebago tribe and founded the second town of Brothertown where members of the Montauks and other tribes still survive.
Queen Maria was one of those Montauks whose parents chose to remain in the hunting grounds of their ancestors. See Photo 8 for Queen Maria as a young woman."
