"Mrs. Harriet Joseph was the niece of Captian Sam Butler, a New England Indian who was possibly Mohegan from Connecticut or Wampanoag from Mashpee, Cape Cod.
Her Uncle Sam Butler married Olive Fowler, a Montauk and she followed his example by marrying Vincent Joseph a Montauk Indian who lived on Shelter Island.
Mrs. Joseph has the oval face type which seems to characterize the Butlers and she is a handsome type of Eastern Indian.
It is interesting to note that in these photos no Indian apparel is worn since this represented the period that Eastern Indians were doing their best to imitate the whites in modes of dressing."
