Description: The reverse reads:
"Vincent Joseph or Vint Joe, as he was called by his tribesmen and white neighbors on Shelter Island, was a splendid physical specimen of the Montauk tribe.
Shelter Island, where the Joseph's spent their lives, was called in the Montauk dialect, manhansett-aha-quash-a-wanuck, island sheltered by islands.
Vint Joe was the son of two Montauks whose people were among those who did not make the removals to Oneida and Wisconsin in 1765 and 1832.
For a glimpse of Vint Joe in more casual clothing, see Photo 20. This photo has real ethnological value since Joe was a Montauk and his wife a New England Indian it affords a rare comparison of the facial structure of the finest types of Long Island and New England Indians."
