Description: The reverse reads:
"The smiling young Montauk Indian girl with school book in hand is Marguerite Fowler who was a member of the Freetown Band of Montauks in East Hampton. She was on her way "cross lots" when this photo was taken of her by her father bright and early in the morning.
This is one of two rare childhood photos of her. For a look at Marguerite Fowler LaPorte in 1943 see Photo 17. She was a direct descendant of Mary Fowler who married the famous Mohegan Indian minister Samson Occum in 1751. Another ancestor of hers, Joseph Fowler migrated from Montauk to Mohegan, Connecticut and married Annie Hoscott of the Mohegan Tribe. They had a son named Jacob who married another Mohegan named Sarah Teecomwas and they had a son named Edwin Fowler. Two Fowler men still live in East Hampton (1968), Morris and Alexander Fowler who is the son of Marguerite.
The Fowler name still survives among the Mohegans of Connecticut, Courtland Fowler Sr. and his son who are of Montauk and Mohegan blood and direct descendants of Joseph Fowler who migrated to Mohegan from Montauk in 1700."
