Description: The reverse reads:
"This photo shows two well known Montauk Indians in a rather happy mood. Man with cheroot in his mouth is Vint Joe, correct name, Vincent Joseph, and his companion is John Joseph Butler, whose brother Charles appears in Photo 7. His sisters Ethel and Mary appear in Photos 8 and 11.
See Photo 10 for a more sedate photo of Vint Joe with his wife. Both men are well known for defying court orders banning them from hunting and occupying cabins that they erected on the Montauk Reservation after it was sold in 1879. These men and several of the Fowlers and Pharoahs refused to recognize the legality of the Montauk land sale and were arrested for trespassing. They were jailed and after completion of their sentences went right back to the reservation and were arrested again. They continued the practice until a sympathetic judge refused to convict them of trespassing on land that he felt had never rightfully been sold."
