Description: The caption reads:
"Intermarriage between the Shinnecocks and the Negroes has flourished for a good many years, according to the testimony of many of the elders of the tribe. Relations between the two races have been cordial and they associate freely among each other.
The author recalls some Indians among the tribe who did not like for their members to marry Negroes, but were powerless to stop the process.
Within this present generation three of the young ladies of the tribe have married young men of the white race although none of them reside on the reservation.
One of the children of this white Indian union is Chantel Fenn, who is the daughter of the former Reta Gardner of the Shinnecocks and Donald Fenn of Toledo, Ohio. Reta Gardner herself has an interesting background, as her mother is a Shinnecock and her father a member of the Mashpee Band of the Wampanoag tribe of Massachusetts.
Chantel's father, Donald Fenn, was a member of the New York City Police Department for five years. He is now a disc jockey on radio station WVOP in Stroudsberg, Pennsylvania.
This is an interesting photo of Chantel in full tribal regalia."
