Description: The caption reads:
"This photo of Janet Barnes was taken in 1943, at the annual June meeting of the Shinnecocks which was held at the church, the first Sunday in June. Members of the Tribe from far and near attended. In former days members used to go from house to house to partake of delicious foods after the church services.
It is interesting here to compare the June meeting of the Shinnecocks, with that of the August meeting of the Narragansetts of Rhode Island. The Narragansett meeting is held on the second Saturday and Sunday in August, at the Little Stone Indian Church deep in Charlestown Woods. Indian dress is worn by many with tribal ceremonies taking place. By contrast no Indian apparel is worn at the Shinnecocks, and no Indian Rituals are observed at this meeting.
Janet Barnes is now a grown young lady and assists with the serving of food at the Annual Shinnecock Pow Wow held on Labor Day weekend."
