Description: The caption reads:
"The old Shinnecock Church just prior to the Hurricane of 1938 which severely damaged the old building. It once stood in Canoe Place near Hampton Bays on the site of the grave of Paul Cuffee, the Indian minister who was Wickham Cuffee's grandfather (Photos 1). This site is marked by a tablet placed there by Suffolk County.
Half of the building was split and skidded the ice on Shinnecock Bay and brought to its present location on the reservation. The other half is also used as a church by the Village of Hampton Bays. The old Shinnecock school may be seen in the foreground. It served as a clubhouse for young people and was destroyed by fire in the winter of 1967."
