Description: The caption reads:
"At the time that this photo was taken in 1943, it is doubtful if the young man in the picture realized that he would some day become one of the tribal trustees whose duty it would be to supervise the upkeep of the Shinnecock Burying Ground. Such is one of the duties of Chief War Hawk today. The Burying Ground lies at the edge of Shinnecock Bay, a beautiful sheet of water, 10 miles long and 3 miles wide. The earliest stone there dates back to 1800. There are also graves there of those who fought in the Civil War as well as the nine Shinnecocks and the one Montauk who went down in the ship "Circassion" in 1876 after they were trying to free it from its reefs.
The tribe has erected a monument in their honor at the Burying Ground."
