Celia M. Hastings Local History Room Postcards

In the late 19th century and early 20th century, before photography became widespread and general, post cards offered the prime method for travelers to show relatives, friends, lovers, and business acquaintances the appearance of places that they had visited. Sometimes black and white images were sent to Europe, notably Germany, to be individually hand tinted, with occasionally unusual results.

The Celia M. Hastings Local History Room Postcard Collection includes images of houses (usually of the socially prominent), houses of worship, hotels, mills, restaurants, streams, lakes, bays, waterfront activities, theaters, trolleys, people (in crowds, or as individuals), public buildings, street scenes, and more. While predominantly representing Patchogue, a few cards represent East Patchogue, North Patchogue, Medford, and some other parts of Long Island.
