The reverse reads: "Figurehead of Whaleship "Jefferson" which sailed from Sag Harbor July 31, 1847 and returned thereto May 28, 1850. A voyage of 33 months and 27 days; Cargo of 3320 bbls. of whale oil; 80 bbls. of sperm oil; and 3400 lbs. bone."

Reverse reads: "Various sized try-kettles of this type were used on shore and later aboard ship to try-out the whale blubber, to obtain whale oil. The oil was then allowed to cool to body temperature before filling the casks. The try-works was rebuilt in June 1955."
