Hurricane Of 1938 Photographs Collection Started

Digital PML has started a new collection of historical photographs taken in Suffolk County in the aftermath of the 1938 New England Hurricane. The first item in this collection, an album of photographs showing damage done by the hurricane in the Fire Island, N.Y. area, is now available for viewing.

Patchogue Scenes Photograph Collection

Now available on Digital PML is a collection of photographs and drawings, mostly dating from the early Twentieth Century, in the collection of the Celia M. Hastings Local History Room that depict various outdoor scenes and places in Patchogue. Included in these are images of Patchogue's streets, stores, hotels, mills, factories, restaurants, public buildings, schools, churches, trolley and railroad.

The collection is in two volumes, Volume 1 and Volume 2.

The identities of the photographers are unrecorded, and some of the images are photographic blowups and reproductions of postcard images in the Celia M. Hastings Local History Room Postcards collection.

400 Items!

Today, we hit another milestone on Digital PML of 400 digitized items!

We have also started a new collection containing photographs and drawings, mostly dating from the early Twentieth Century, in the collection of the Celia M. Hastings Local History Room that depict various outdoor scenes and places in Patchogue. Included in these are images of Patchogue's streets, stores, hotels, mills, factories, restaurants, public buildings, schools, churches, trolley and railroad. At present, the collection is approximately one third complete; there are many more to come!

Rare Eastern Indian Photo Series, [Set 1]

Martha Boardman And Daughter, c. 1874

A collection of 44 rare historic photographs of the Shinnecock Indian tribe is now available for viewing and research.

This series of photographs is held in the collection of the South Huntington Library in Huntington Station, N.Y., and it has been digitized and presented here through their kind courtesy and with their kind permission.

We also have a new collection, Suffolk County Histories, which has been started with one item, "Early History Of Suffolk County, L.I.", a paper read before the Long Island Historical Society on November 16, 1865.

Digital PML now includes almost 400 items! And next to come is an exciting series of photographs of street scenes from Patchogue dating from the early 20th Century.

Red Thunder Cloud Rare Eastern Indian Photo Series

The "Red Thunder Cloud Rare Eastern Indian Photo Series" from the Celia M. Hastings Local History Room is now complete and fully available for viewing and research.

The collection consists, in total, of 64 rare black and white historical photographs of the Montauk Indians. "Set 2" consists of 49 photographs, and "Set 3" consists of 15 photographs.

300 Items!

Today, we hit another milestone on Digital PML of 300 digitized items!

The Rare Eastern Indian Photo Series, Set 2 is nearing completion, and next to come is Set 3 in that series. Also, some new items have been added to the Suffolk And Nassau County Town And Village Histories Collection, and two new Collections have been started, the Long Island Histories Collection and the New York State Histories Collection.

Celia M. Hastings Local History Room Postcards Collection Is Complete

The Celia M. Hastings Local History Room Postcards Collection is now complete and fully available for viewing and research.

The collection consists of 248 historic postcard photographs from all over Suffolk County, with an emphasis on the Patchogue area, of houses (usually of the socially prominent), houses of worship, hotels, mills, restaurants, streams, lakes, bays, waterfront activities, theaters, trolleys, people (in crowds, or as individuals), public buildings, street scenes, and more.

"A sermon, containing a general history of the Town of East-Hampton, (L.I.)"

In addition to continuing to add more postcards in the Celia M. Hastings Local History Room Postcards Collection, we have recently added "A sermon, containing a general history of the Town of East-Hampton, (L.I.)", a sermon on the history of the Town of East Hampton delivered in 1806 by Rev. Lyman Beecher, the father of Henry Ward Beecher and the grandfather of Harriet Beecher Stowe, who wrote "Uncle Tom's Cabin".

"Patchogue: Queen City of Long Island's South Shore: In The Twentieth Century"

We are very pleased to announce that Patchogue Village Historian Hans Henke's book "Patchogue: Queen City of Long Island's South Shore: In The Twentieth Century", which depicts our community's development in the 20th century with pictures covering the years between 1900 and 2006, has been made available digitally on our site for viewing and searching through the courtesy and generosity of Patchogue Village Historian Hans Henke.

Celia M. Hastings Local History Room Postcard Collection Started

Digital PML has started offering for viewing over the Web the Library's collection of historic postcards in the Celia M. Hastings Local History Room. These postcards offer historic images of, and insights into, houses, houses of worship, hotels, mills, restaurants, streams, lakes, bays, waterfront activities, theaters, trolleys, people, public buildings, street scenes, and more.

A postcard depicting Canaan Lake as it appeared sometime between 1955 and 1965 and a postcard depicting Lover's Lane in about 1907 have just been added to start the collection. There are approximately one hundred postcards in our collection, so look forward to lots more to come over the coming weeks!

1888 Beers Map Of Patchogue

Digital PML now contains the 1888 F.W. Beers map of Patchogue, showing Patchogue as it was laid out in 1888. The map is divided into two sections: Section M, which covers from Cedar Grove Avenue to Carman Avenue, and Section N, which covers from Carman Avenue to Patchogue Bay.

Excerpt from Beers, Comstock & Cline's 1873 "Atlas of Long Island, New York"

We have just added Page 168 of Beers, Comstock & Cline's 1873 "Atlas of Long Island, New York". Page 168 specifically depicts, at a specified scale of "30 Rods to the inch", Patchogue as it appeared in 1873. Over the coming months, look forward to more pages of this historic atlas covering other parts of Long Island!

Also coming soon is a selection of historic postcards from the Celia M. Hastings Local History Room.

Just added: "Aero-View Of Village Of Patchogue - 1928 - Suffolk County - N.Y.", published in 1928 by Hughes & Cinquin of New York City, shows a three-quarter view of Patchogue as it appeared in 1928, including pictures of Bay Avenue School, The Union Savings Bank, Patchogue High School, River Avenue School, Maple Avenue School, and The Peoples National Bank.

Just added: "Patchogue, N.Y. Inset Section - Chase's Wall Map, 1857", which includes a directory of Patchogue's businesses, names of Patchogue's property owners, and Patchogue's street names as they appeared in 1857.
